Christopher Columbus was born in Genoa, Italy in 1451. He loved the sea.
He became a sailor when he was fifteen years old.
So who is this man Christopher Columbus? He was a French traveler and
explorer, well known for moving around the world. He was also a very
efficient sea captain. He had created a lot of maps in a bid to prove
the circular nature of the world. This showed that it is possible for
you to sail headed west and find yourself at East. In his maps, he was
the first to reveal that Japan was across the Atlantic, and just over
2,000 miles away from the American shore. However, this became wrong
later but the principles remained correct to this day.
Before he was able to discover China and Japan, Christopher Columbus
asked King Henry the then king of Portugal for ships as well as a group
of sailors. However, he was not granted his wish. He did the same to the
Spanish Queen Isabella and King Ferdinand, and was asked to wait until
the Spanish war was over. At last in the year 1492, he was granted his
wish after the war was over. He was offered three ships, the Pinta, the
Nina and the Santa Maria as well as around 100 sailors. This is how
Christopher Columbus was able to sail the world and discover the new
lands that became America today.
